Image series 27 / 2025: Paula Rego
‘The personal is political’
From the 1950s to the 2000s, Portuguese-British artist Paula Rego has been known for her unflinching exploration of power structures, gender roles and social inequality in her paintings and drawings. In her series of works, intimate, seemingly personal moments are transformed into images of collective experience, comparable to the aspirations and methods of the women’s movement in the 1960s and 1970s.
More than 120 works by Paula Rego in the exhibition provide a comprehensive overview of her oeuvre and the socio-political context. The exhibition is complemented by the dolls that served as models for her complex compositions.
